InterNetNews is a complete Usenet system. The cornerstone of the package
is innd, an NNTP server that multiplexes all I/O. Newsreading is handled
by a separate server, nnrpd, that is spawned for each client. Both innd
and nnrpd have some slight variances from the NNTP protocol.

Overhaul for the inn ports:
- Turn inn-stable and inn-current into slaves, as they are pretty much
clones of news/inn.
- Update the above ports to recent snapshots.
- Allow inn's database and spool directories to be placed outside
PREFIX (e.g. under /var).
- Add OPTIONS knobs.
For the inn ports:
- Fix build in the case where the host machine has either no DNS, or an
incomplete hostname.
- Use a generic placeholder in the default config file rather than the
build machine's name.
- Pet portlint(1) while here.
- Add WITH_STANDARD_ETC knob
If you define WITH_STANDARD_ETC inn config files are put
in ${PREFIX}/etc/inn

Both ports need perl to configure (see configure looks for the
version) and to run (bunch of perl-scripts in contrib/samples/innfeed
directory)

Update to 2.3.20001220, and try to get as close to news/inn as possible.
Ideally, this should use news/inn as MASTERDIR, or the two ports should be
merged.
maintenance -> ports@FreeBSD.org Don't use inn anymore after migrating to
leafnode+ maintaining leafnode+ is more suitable for my home environment. So
I'm looking for somebody who can test and commit updates and so really
maintain the port.
From the patch submission: Right now it's difficult to determine if one must
upgrade the currently installed server as the pkg_info reports one has
"inn-stable-v22" installed. With this patch it's easier to compare the
installed version against /usr/ports/INDEX as the version tag changes when you
upgrade the port.
<security-officer> Don't install rnews setgid uucp by default - the INN
maintainers don't recommend this binary run with privileges because it is not
secure. Anyone who needs the ability to fetch news via UUCP can rebuild the
port with WITH_UUCP_SECURITY_HOLE defined. </security-officer>
Remove setuid news privileges on inews by recommendation of inn maintainers
Correct typo from 1.33 which made rnews setuid news, not setgid uucp which it
actually required to implement the intended change.
